The Kaule Prototype

The Kaule Prototype is an attempt at earthquake reconstruction in remote Nepal using traditional skills and aesthetics, and local resources and talents.

In the first phase, a prototype house has been designed and constructed by training the community in traditional construction practices that are seismically sound, and using materials like stone, bamboo and mud that are locally available.

The prototype is awaiting formal approval by experts appointed by the Reconstruction Committee, Department of Urban Development and Construction, Government of Nepal. Once the approval is obtained, the design will be applied towards re-constructing around 200 houses in the twin villages of Kaule and Bhangeri – and help them re-gain their rightful place in the natural and sustainable setting that remote Nepal has to offer.
